The Taif miqat is Qarn al-Manazil, also called As-Sayl al-Kabir. It is the point on the road between Taif and Makkah where pilgrims coming from the Taif side must enter Ihram for Umrah or Hajj. You will also see it written as Qarnul Manazil and Sail al-Kabeer.
The confusing part is that this one miqat has two mosques: As-Sayl al-Kabir and Wadi Muharram. Which one you pass depends on the road you take. This guide explains the difference, how far each one is from Taif and Makkah, who uses this miqat, and how to get there. It was last updated in October 2026.
What Is the Taif Miqat?
The Taif miqat is Qarn al-Manazil, the place the Prophet ï·º fixed for the people of Najd to enter Ihram. In the hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (Sahih al-Bukhari 1524), the Prophet ï·º set Dhul-Hulayfah for the people of Madinah, Al-Juhfah for the people of Sham, Qarn al-Manazil for the people of Najd and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen.
The name “Taif miqat” is not an official one. People use it because the miqat sits on the road between Taif and Makkah, and because almost everyone who enters Ihram here has come through Taif. According to Saudipedia, the site is in Makkah Province and is designated as the miqat of Najd.
A miqat is a boundary that a person intending Umrah or Hajj must not cross without being in Ihram. If you are new to this, the guide to the miqats for Umrah explains all five.
Are Qarn al-Manazil and As-Sayl al-Kabir the Same Place?
Yes. Qarn al-Manazil and As-Sayl al-Kabir are the same miqat. Qarn al-Manazil is the classical name used in the hadith. As-Sayl al-Kabir (written Sail al-Kabeer or Sayl al-Kabir) is the modern name of the valley and the town where the main mosque stands.
The Saudi Press Agency describes the first mosque as “Al-Sayl Al-Kabeer, also known as Qarn Al-Manazil” and the second as Wadi Muharram, and notes that both serve pilgrims from the southern, central and eastern regions (Saudi Press Agency). Saudipedia adds that the name Qarn covers the whole valley, whether you approach through As-Sayl al-Kabir or by the Jabal Kara mountain route.
| Name you will see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Qarn al-Manazil, Qarnul Manazil | The classical name from the hadith. It refers to the whole miqat |
| As-Sayl al-Kabir, Sail al-Kabeer, Sayl al-Kabir | The modern name of the main mosque and valley on the Taif–Makkah road |
| Wadi Muharram, Wadi Mehrim | The second mosque of the same miqat, on the Al-Hada mountain road |
| Taif miqat | A common nickname for the miqat. Not an official name |
As-Sayl al-Kabir vs Wadi Muharram: Which One Will You Pass?
You pass As-Sayl al-Kabir if you drive the Taif–Makkah road through the Sayl valley, and Wadi Muharram if you take the Al-Hada mountain road. Both are inside the boundary of Qarn al-Manazil, so either mosque is a valid place to enter Ihram. Your road decides which one is on your way.

| As-Sayl al-Kabir | Wadi Muharram | |
|---|---|---|
| Road | Taif–Makkah (Al-Sayl) road | Al-Hada mountain road, via Jabal Kara |
| From Taif | About 35 km | About 10 km |
| From Makkah | About 80 km | About 76 km |
| Direction from Makkah | North-east | South-east, by the mountain road |
| Best for | Drivers on the main valley road, coaches and groups | Drivers coming down the Al-Hada road |
| Distance between the two mosques | About 33 km | About 33 km |
A simple rule: ask your driver which road he is taking, and enter Ihram at the mosque on that road. You do not need to go out of your way to visit both.
A note on distances. Sources do not agree, because they measure to different points. Saudipedia gives 80 km from Makkah for As-Sayl al-Kabir and 76 km for Wadi Muharram by the mountain road, while the Saudi Press Agency and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah materials place the town of As-Sayl al-Kabir around 94 km away. Saudipedia’s list of miqats gives a round 75 km for Qarn al-Manazil as a whole. These are not contradictions. They are different measuring points on the same road.
How Far Is Qarn al-Manazil from Makkah and Taif?
Qarn al-Manazil is roughly 75 to 95 km from Makkah, depending on which point you measure, which makes it the closest of the five miqats to the city. From Taif it is much closer: about 10 km to Wadi Muharram and about 35 km to As-Sayl al-Kabir.
By car, plan for roughly 1 to 1.5 hours between Makkah and the miqat, depending on the road and traffic. Allow extra on Thursdays, Fridays and in Ramadan, when the Taif road is busy.
- Taif to Wadi Muharram: about 10 km, a short drive up the mountain road.
- Taif to As-Sayl al-Kabir: about 35 km.
- Makkah to Wadi Muharram: about 76 km by the mountain road.
- Makkah to As-Sayl al-Kabir: about 80 km, or about 94 km if you measure to the town.

Who Enters Ihram at Qarn al-Manazil?
Qarn al-Manazil is the miqat for the people of Najd, and for anyone who reaches Makkah from the Taif side. That includes people travelling from Riyadh, Qassim, the Eastern Province and the Gulf states, and pilgrims who have flown into Taif and are driving down to Makkah.
| Your journey | Where you enter Ihram |
|---|---|
| Driving or taking a coach from Riyadh, Qassim or the Eastern Province via Taif | Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir or Wadi Muharram) |
| Flying into Taif Airport, then going to Makkah by road | Qarn al-Manazil, on the road down from Taif |
| Staying in Taif and visiting Makkah for Umrah | Qarn al-Manazil |
| Coming from Madinah | Dhul-Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), not Qarn al-Manazil |
| Coming up the coast from the north or from Egypt | Al-Juhfah (Rabigh), not Qarn al-Manazil |
| Already inside Makkah and wanting another Umrah | Outside the Haram boundary, such as Masjid Ayesha or Ji’ranah. Not a miqat |
Only the pilgrim who is passing through is bound by a miqat. If you live between the miqat and Makkah, you enter Ihram from where you live, as the same hadith explains.
Flying to Taif, Jeddah or Riyadh: Where Do You Enter Ihram?
If you fly into Taif Airport, you enter Ihram at Qarn al-Manazil on the road to Makkah. Taif is on the Najd side of the miqat, so you have not crossed it yet. Plan the stop with your driver before you leave the airport.
If you fly to Jeddah, the situation is different. Jeddah is inside the miqat boundaries, so pilgrims arriving by air normally enter Ihram before landing, at the point the airline or crew announces as the miqat. Pilgrims from Riyadh and other parts of Najd who fly directly to Jeddah should ask a scholar or their Umrah operator how to apply the rule on their flight.
If you are unsure which miqat applies to your route, ask a qualified scholar before you travel. We can take you to the right place, but we cannot decide the ruling.
The Five Miqats Compared
Qarn al-Manazil is the closest miqat to Makkah. Here is how it compares with the other four.

| Miqat | Also called | Distance from Makkah | For pilgrims from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhul-Hulayfah | Abyar Ali | About 400 km | Madinah |
| Al-Juhfah | Rabigh | About 180 km | Sham, Egypt, North Africa |
| Qarn al-Manazil | As-Sayl al-Kabir, Wadi Muharram | About 75–95 km | Najd, the Gulf, and the Taif road |
| Yalamlam | As-Sa’diyyah | About 120 km | Yemen, and flights from South Asia |
| Dhat Irq | Al-Dibai | About 100 km | Iraq and the east |
The hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari 1524 names four miqats; the Saudi Press Agency’s overview of the miqats lists all five. Dhat Irq, for the people of Iraq, is mentioned in other narrations and is counted as the fifth miqat. For the other miqats, see our guides to Al-Juhfah and Dhul-Hulayfah.
How to Get to the Taif Miqat
The simplest way to reach Qarn al-Manazil is to ask your driver to stop there on your journey, rather than making a separate trip. It lies on the road between Taif and Makkah, so most pilgrims enter Ihram on the way.
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Private taxi with a miqat stop | Pickup from your hotel or the airport, a stop at the mosque while you enter Ihram, then on to Makkah | Families, elderly pilgrims, groups, anyone who wants a fixed price |
| Your own car | Follow the Taif–Makkah road and watch for the mosque | Confident drivers who know the road |
| Coach or tour operator | The operator schedules the stop | Package groups |

What to Do at the Miqat, Step by Step
At the miqat you make wudu, change into Ihram if you have not already, pray, make the intention for Umrah, and begin reciting the Talbiyah. The stop usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

- Prepare before you arrive. Many pilgrims take a bath (ghusl) at the hotel. Men can put on the two Ihram sheets before leaving or change at the mosque.
- Stop at the mosque. Ask your driver to park and wait. Do not cross the miqat without stopping.
- Make wudu and pray. Many pilgrims pray two rak’ah, or the obligatory prayer if it is time for one.
- Make the intention (niyyah) for Umrah and recite the Talbiyah. From this moment the rules of Ihram apply. Men recite it aloud; women recite it quietly.
- Continue to Makkah and keep reciting the Talbiyah on the road. Then perform Tawaf and Sa’i, and shorten or shave the hair.
If you have not yet made the intention, you are not yet in Ihram, even if you are wearing the sheets. This is practical travel guidance, not a religious ruling. For the detailed rules of Ihram, follow a scholar you trust.
If you realise that you have passed the miqat without entering Ihram, do not guess. Stop when it is safe and ask a qualified scholar what applies in your case. Scholars give different answers depending on the situation.
Visiting Makkah afterwards for a second Umrah is a different case, and uses a place outside the Haram such as Masjid Ayesha.
Facilities at the Taif Miqat
Both mosques at Qarn al-Manazil are prepared each season for pilgrims entering Ihram. The Saudi Press Agency reported air conditioning, lighting, marked paths for pilgrims entering and leaving, dedicated lanes for buses, vehicle parking areas, and staff, including women, who answer pilgrims’ questions and look after maintenance (Saudi Press Agency, June 2024).
Facilities can change between seasons, so we suggest bringing what you need rather than relying on shops at the site:
- Your Ihram, a small bag, and spare clothes for after Tawaf.
- Your phone, Nusuk permit and ID.
- A bottle of water, especially in summer.
- Your driver’s number, so you can find each other in a busy car park.
You need a valid Umrah permit to enter Makkah. Permits and bookings are made through the Nusuk app, and the rules are updated by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, so check the current requirements before you travel.
History of Qarn al-Manazil
Qarn al-Manazil has been a pilgrim station for centuries and is linked to the Prophet’s ï·º journey to Taif. According to Saudipedia, the site is mentioned in accounts of the Battle of Hunayn and the siege of Taif in 630 CE, and geographers list it as a station on the Yemeni Hajj route.
Saudipedia says the main mosque stands on the eastern bank of Wadi Qarn (As-Sayl al-Kabir) on the Taif–Makkah road, and that the second mosque is about 33 km further south along the valley. The Saudi authorities prepare both mosques each season for pilgrims.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking there is only one mosque. There are two, on two different roads. Enter Ihram at the one on your route.
- Letting the driver pass the miqat. Tell him in advance that you need to stop and enter Ihram. Do not wait until you see the mosque.
- Confusing it with Masjid Ayesha. Masjid Ayesha is for people already inside Makkah. If you are arriving from outside, use the miqat on your route.
- Navigating to the town instead of the mosque. Search for the mosque by name, such as “Miqat As-Sayl Al-Kabir” or “Miqat Wadi Muharram”, and confirm the pin with your driver.
- Assuming the airport is the miqat. Taif Airport is before the miqat. Jeddah Airport is after it. Check which side you are on.
- Booking a car that is too small. Count adults, children and luggage, then choose from our vehicles.
